Historical Background

Formed due to the Imperial Japanese Navy’s distrust of the Army, the SNLF acted as Japan’s own marine infantry. First deployed during the Shanghai Incident of 1932, these elite troops quickly earned a reputation for discipline, courage, and unwavering resolve. They played key roles in early Pacific victories, including landings in the Philippines, Dutch East Indies, and Timor, but also endured fierce fighting and heavy losses at Milne Bay and Tarawa.
