The Victrix Late Roman Horse Archers set (VXDA014) contains 12 multi-pose 28mm hard plastic miniatures from the Victrix Dark Ages range. These cavalry models depict agile mounted skirmishers equipped with composite bows, quivers, sword scabbards, and small round shields, with poses representing archers shooting to the front, side, and rear – showcasing the mobility and versatility of Roman light cavalry.

Historically, the Roman Empire steadily increased its reliance on mounted horse archers as they encountered steppe nomads and Sassanid Persians, who specialised in devastating mounted archery. Many Roman horse archer units were even recruited from former enemies, adding to their effectiveness. The Notitia Dignitatum, a late Roman military document, records at least nine units of Roman horse archers, with even more likely serving in the eastern provinces.

These miniatures are not limited to Late Roman forces – they are also suitable as Early Byzantine horse archers under Belisarius, or as Palmyran cavalry serving as Rome’s eastern buffer state. This makes the set highly flexible for different historical armies and scenarios.
