The M24 Chaffee, officially designated Light Tank M24, entered service during the later stages of World War II. Designed as a replacement for the M5 Stuart, the Chaffee provided improved mobility, better armour, and a 75mm main gun. It went on to serve in conflicts worldwide, including the Korean War and colonial wars fought by France. In British service it was named after US General Adna R. Chaffee Jr, a pioneer of American armoured warfare. The tank remained in front-line use until the 1960s, with some nations operating upgraded versions into the late 20th century.
