Derived from the four-engine Boeing 707 airliner, the KC-135 entered service with the United States Air Force in the late 1950s. It was originally developed to provide aerial refuelling support for long-range bombers of the Strategic Air Command, but its role expanded over the years to support fighter, attack and other military aircraft during a wide range of operations.

The Stratotanker is powered by four underwing turbofan engines and can reach speeds exceeding 930 km/h. Its primary refuelling system is the rigid flying boom mounted beneath the rear fuselage, while additional underwing pods can be fitted with flexible hose systems.

The aircraft can carry almost 100,000 kg of fuel, allowing it to significantly extend the operational range of aircraft receiving fuel in flight.
