McDonnell Douglas F-15E Strike Eagle
The F-15 Eagle programme was launched in the 1970s to provide the United States Air Force with a high-performance air superiority fighter. Its highly effective aerodynamic design, featuring twin vertical tails, a sturdy mid-mounted wing, and powerful twin engines, laid the foundation for one of the most capable combat aircraft of its generation.
From this platform evolved the two-seat, all-weather F-15E Strike Eagle, introduced in the late 1980s as a fighter-bomber variant replacing the ageing General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark. While retaining the flight performance of the original Eagle, the F-15E added advanced ground-attack capability.
The tandem cockpit houses both the pilot and the Weapon Systems Officer (WSO). From the rear seat, the WSO manages route navigation, target acquisition, and electronic countermeasures, enabling the aircraft to conduct:
- Ground attack missions
- Precision bombing
- Deep strike and interdiction operations
The F-15E saw active deployment during operations such as Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm in the early 1990s, proving its effectiveness in combat.
