Known in Greek as the oxybeles, meaning sharp arrow, this weapon was designed to fire powerful bolts capable of piercing armour and disrupting enemy formations.

Developed from the earlier gastrophetes belly bow, the oxybeles was enlarged and mounted on a stand with a stock and trigger mechanism. This allowed crews to aim and release powerful bolts with greater force and accuracy. These weapons became increasingly common in Hellenistic armies and were used to support infantry formations and defend key positions on the battlefield.
