The Fairey Gannet is arguably the most unconventional aircraft designed by Fairey to enter full production. Developed to meet a 1945 Royal Navy requirement, this advanced carrier-based turboprop-powered aircraft was specifically engineered as an anti-submarine hunter-killer. In response to the expansion of the Soviet submarine fleet at the onset of the Cold War, the Gannet was equipped with cutting-edge electronic detection equipment. Upon detecting an enemy submarine, it could effectively mark, track, and engage using bombs, depth charges, rockets, and air-launched acoustic torpedoes, proving to be a highly effective anti-submarine platform.

One of the Gannet's standout features is its innovative Armstrong Siddeley Double Mamba powerplant, which consists of two gas turbine engines mounted side by side, sharing a common gearbox while operating independently. Each engine drives its own coaxially mounted, contra-rotating propeller, contributing to the aircraft's unique appearance. Additionally, the bi-folding wing system allows this large aircraft to be stored aboard relatively small aircraft carriers, enhancing its operational versatility.
