It is 1935 in Seoul, Korea, and struggling artist Yun Iho is commissioned by the elderly, reclusive Madam Song Jeonghwa to paint a new portrait of her. But when Iho collects art supplies from the previous artist's room, he discovers an ominous warning: "Do not finish the portrait."

When Iho finally meets Madam Song, he is surprised to find that she appears startlingly young and beautiful, despite asking him to paint her as though she were eighty. As she tells him seemingly unrelated stories about a series of unsolved murders in Shanghai, Iho becomes increasingly confused and uneasy.

As the mystery unfolds, Iho discovers that no artist has ever left Madam Song's hotel alive. He begins to suspect the horrifying truth behind his mysterious client and what she may be capable of.
