Crimean War British Foot Guard Command - Black Powder
Crimean War British Foot Guard Command - Black Powder
Unlike most British infantry regiments of the Crimean War, which typically fielded a single battalion, the elite Foot Guards mustered their strength in greater numbers. The Grenadier Guards deployed three battalions, while the Coldstream Guards and Scots Fusilier Guards each fielded two, reflecting their prestige and importance within the British Army.
The Battle of Inkerman stands as a defining moment in Foot Guards history. Fighting in isolation and without support, they held their position against overwhelming Russian forces. The Grenadier Guards were uniquely distinguished as the only regiment to carry their colours into the battle, turning them into both a rallying point and a symbol to be defended at all costs. In the brutal struggle to protect the colours, Grenadier Captain Percy earned the Victoria Cross for his gallantry.
To this day, the legacy of Inkerman endures. The honour ‘Inkerman Company’ is still borne by a company of the Grenadier Guards, as well as by a company at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst.
