More than fifty British line regiments served in the Crimean campaign. Many of the men were no saints — some having enlisted to escape prison or poverty — yet when tested against Russian forces they fought with remarkable courage and determination. 

At Alma, Sevastopol, and Inkerman, the redcoats paid a heavy price in service to Queen and country. Often described as the first modern war, the Crimean conflict was equally the last of the old-fashioned wars, with troops led by officers whose experience stretched back to Waterloo. Tragically, poor leadership, neglect, and disease claimed far more British lives than enemy fire.
