During the Crimean War, the British Foot Guards stood apart from convention. While most infantry regiments fielded a single battalion, the Foot Guards deployed in greater strength – the Grenadier Guards with three battalions, the Coldstream Guards with two, and the Scots Fusilier Guards with two – reflecting their elite status within the British Army.

The Battle of Inkerman is especially emblematic of their steadfast reputation. Isolated and unsupported, the Foot Guards held their ground against overwhelming Russian forces. The Grenadier Guards were the only regiment to carry their colours into the battle, which became both a rallying point and a symbol worth defending at all costs. In the desperate fighting to protect the colours, Captain Percy of the Grenadiers was awarded the Victoria Cross.

In honour of this extraordinary stand, the title ‘Inkerman Company’ is still carried today by a Grenadier Guards company, as well as by a company at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst.
