Originally formed in Egypt in December 1914, the Australian & New Zealand Army Corps operated during the Gallipoli Campaign under General William Birdwood, combining troops from the First Australian Imperial Force and the First New Zealand Expeditionary Force. British and Indian units were occasionally attached. The corps was disbanded in 1916 following the Allied evacuation of the Gallipoli Peninsula but saw a brief re-establishment during the Second World War in the Battle of Greece in 1941. Elements of the corps also served in the Vietnam War, with Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment companies integrated into Royal Australian Regiment battalions.
