The ARVN formed the ground forces of South Vietnam from 1955 until the Fall of Saigon in April 1975. At its peak, an estimated one in nine South Vietnamese citizens served, including Regular Forces, Regional Forces, and Popular Forces militias. Throughout the Vietnam War, the ARVN evolved from a post-colonial army trained by the United States into a conventional force capable of helicopter-borne operations. Following the American withdrawal and Vietnamization, the ARVN expanded and modernized, becoming one of the most effective forces in the Free World, second only to the United States and Israeli militaries in terms of training and operational effectiveness.
