History

The Handley Page Victor was one of Britain’s three famous ‘V’ bombers, serving as a jet-powered strategic nuclear deterrent during the tense early decades of the Cold War. Designed for long-range, low-altitude penetration missions, the Victor was later adapted for reconnaissance and aerial refuelling duties when newer technologies replaced its role as a frontline bomber.

The Victor B.2 variant entered service in the early 1960s, equipped with powerful Rolls Royce Conway engines and enhanced tactical capabilities. Many were upgraded into the B.2R configuration to carry the ‘Blue Steel’ stand-off nuclear missile. Following the adoption of Polaris submarine missiles, the Victor transitioned fully into a tanker role, extending its service life well into the late 20th century.
