Roused by revenge, François Léon de Rochebaron and his committed troupe of followers had escaped a Spanish prison hulk, commencing their infamous odyssey. In the wake of his barbaric detention by Spanish oppressors, Rochebaron declared perpetual enmity for France's adversaries.

Thus began the tale of 'The Butchers' of the 73rd Line Regiment. Across the Spanish peninsular, their barbarity was feared and notorious. When faced by a British legion at Grijo in 1809, 'Les Bouchers' encountered an equal match for their ruthless form of warfare. In the thick of the skirmish, Rochebaron confronted an English Captain in a frenzied confrontation, mirrored by a ruthless scuffle between his pet poodle, Fifi, and the English mongrel, Duchess. Both parties walked away that day, vowing to meet again and bring the quarrel to a close.
